The Perfect Fall Day in Northern Michigan

The Perfect Fall Day in Northern Michigan

There is no prettier place to be in the fall than Northern Michigan. The beautiful changing leaves are like no other. Every year, I make time to enjoy these fall favorites of mine along M-119, also called the Tunnel of Trees. After strolling the streets in downtown Petoskey and shopping Grandpa Shorter's Gifts and The Katydid, here are my top spots to visit each autumn.

Pond Hill Farm

Pond Hill Farm is an amazing and welcoming place to bring your family and friends with many things to do! You can walk the trails and feed the fish in the Trout pond, and there are free hayrides every Saturday and Sunday from 1-4pm. Another fun thing to do is to buy some squash and launch it in their huge slingshot. Pond Hill Farm is a farm with many animals to view in the barn as well. They sell their own homemade jams and produce at the market too. Their restaurant uses their fresh ingredients too, where they brew their own beer and make their own wine.

Good Hart

Good Hart is a small town past Pond Hill Farm, if you continue along M-119. In Good Hart, there is a general store thats building has been there since 1934, with the original front windows still in there. They sell a lot of cute things, and I would recommend picking up a homemade pot pie and a cookie for later!

Sturgeon Bay Dunes

Sturgeon Bay is a gorgeous public beach along M-119.There, you can hike along the miles of dunes, stroll the shoreline, and swim, if it’s warm enough, in clear Lake Michigan. The North Country National Scenic Trail can be accessed easily through Sturgeon Bay, where you can hike to the Mackinac Bridge.

Legs Inn

Legs Inn is an iconic restaurant that has been family owned for over 100 years. It is only open from May until the end of October though, so make sure you catch it before it closes! It has traditional polish food with locally caught whitefish and fresh produce for their recipes. Some favorite dishes include the Taste of Poland, which has Golabki (a cabbage roll), kielbasa (polish sausage), pierogies, and sauerkraut.

Headlands International Dark Sky Park

The Headlands International Dark Sky Park is located in Mackinaw City, and it is right on the water. There, you can lay out on a blanket and view the bright stars as they appear in the night. It is incredibly relaxing and breathtaking, and if you are lucky, you might even get to see the Northern Lights!

What does your perfect fall day look like in northern Michigan?
